Cleansing – Naturally

April 22, 2013

As spring approaches one may consider going on a cleansing program to attain a healthier digestive system. A typical cleanse can last anywhere from approximately one to two weeks, it’s really up to you and how you feel.

During the colon cleanse I advocate you implement a diet of high-fiber fruits and vegetables. To have a profound impact it is best to avoid meat and foods containing gluten, dairy products, alcohol and anything with added sugar.

I recommend eating more of the following:

Dnadelion greens Parsley Green beans Radish
Broccoli Cucumber Leeks Spinach
Brussel sprouts Eggplant Okra Swiss chard
Cabbage Garlic Olives Tomatoes
Cauliflower Ginger Onions Zucchini
Beet greens Kale Sprouts
Collard greens Lettuce Watercress

Since some fruits are high in sugar it is best to avoid melons as well as dried fruits i.e. date and raisins. Please note use fresh fruits, and avoid juicing, since it removes most of the fiber. Try to consume more of the follow listed below instead:

Blackberries Grapes Plums
Blueberries Green Apples Raspberries
Cherries Oranges Strawberries
Goji Berries Peaches Acai
Grapefruit Pears Gauva

Fiber is a crucial part of any cleansing program. To do an effective colon cleanse you need a large amount of fiber each day to ensure regular bowel movements. Many may not consume sufficient fiber on a daily basis and one reason is that the refined foods that form a large part of our diets have had much of the fiber removed during processing. Fiber is important since it bulks up the fecal matter in your intestines and speeds up the transit of waste through your gut. In addition, fiber stimulates the ‘friendly bacteria’ found in the colon.Besides probiotics and fiber to help with colon cleansing Milk thistle is an excellent herb to consider assisting with any program.

Description

Milk thistle fruit consists of ripe seed of S. marianum (L.)

Principal health related actions

Antidepressant, hepatoprotective, cholagogue, demulcent, detoxifier, tonic.

ChemistryandPharmacology

Milk thistle seed contains flavone lignans, collectively referred to as silymarin. The three principle components of silymarin are the flavanolignans silybin, silychristin, and The therapeutic activity of silymarin is based on two sites or mechanisms of action: (a) It alters the structure of the outer cell membrane of the hepatocytes in such a way as to prevent penetration of the liver toxin into the interior of the cell. (b) It stimulates the action of nucleolar polymerase A, resulting in an increase in ribosomal protein synthesis, and thus stimulates the regenerative ability of the liver and the formation of new hepatocytes. Milk thistle extract provides hepatocellular protection, interruption of enterohepatic recirculation of toxins, stimulation of protein synthesis and regeneration of damaged hepatocytes, as well as antioxidant activity.

Uses

Enhances liver function and liver cell reproduction. Promotes flow of bile, critical for breakdown fats. Detoxifies poisons such as alcohol, nicotine, carbon monoxide and others that get into the bloodstream.

Contraindications None known.

Side Effects

A mild laxative effect has been observed in occasional instances.
